AstraZeneca has agreed that almost all the Covid vaccine doses made in the Netherlands over which the UK has made a claim will stay in the EU, as Brussels’ vaccine tsar said Europe was now on track for an “almost normal” tourist season.
LONDON - Vaccines are the new diplomacy, but it s not all that different to the old diplomacy.
Countries around the world have been plunged into tense talks over vaccine supplies that have threatened to boil over into full-blown trade wars, with rich nations squabbling with each other while poorer nations look on, waiting for help.
Western states are hoping to take the moral high ground over China and Russia, which stand accused of handing out jabs in a bid for influence. But all parties are looking to see what they can gain from the fight, with some in Europe and the U.S. recognizing that vaccine donations to developing nations are a downpayment for future geopolitical clout.

The UK will be reliant on the EU to complete its vaccine rollout and a little recognition of that would not go amiss, the European commissioner leading Brusselsâ vaccine taskforce has said â adding that Europe could have fully vaccinated 70% of adults before the UK reaches its own target of one dose for all over-18s by the end of July.
Thierry Breton also said AstraZeneca had agreed that almost all the Covid vaccine doses made in the Netherlands over which the UK has made a claim will stay in the EU.
The first phase of the UKâs vaccination rollout was âhugely impressiveâ, Breton said, but Britain was âstarting to realise that one dose is not enough, that you also need second doses â and that to a large extent it will be dependent on Europeâ for them.
