Kendal mum who assaulted children gets suspended jail term

1/1 A Kendal mum who assaulted two children while drunk found herself back in trouble after failing to comply with her court punishment for the crimes. Carlisle Crown Court heard the woman – described by her daughter as a ‘monster’ when in drink – became intoxicated after a family trip to the Lakes Alive festival in early September 2019. Having consumed vodka and beer to excess, she grabbed and grappled with her daughter before throwing her against a wall. The young girl sought safety with friends that night. But a month later, police were called after an incident at her home. “The defendant had been shouting, had set fire to the kitchen and also assaulted her daughter,” said Kim Whittlestone, prosecuting. “She had hit her, bit her, scratched her neck and upper chest and grabbed her by the throat, strangling her.”

Broughton Village garden show returns with flowers and history

GARDEN lovers pitched up to Broughton village on Sunday afternoon to celebrate all things grown National prize winners Chris Hewlett, known for his giant vegetables and Mary Ridley, Royal Horticultural Society’s trusted judge of snowdrops, opened their gardens to share their knowledge and entertain visitors. There were 16 gardens on show and people were invited to enjoy tea and cake at the popular event which was meant to happen last year but was postponed due to Covid. As well as small cottage gardens and vast acres of green by the Wallop Brook chalk stream, Broughton has a well-documented history, and this was the perfect opportunity to showcase material from the newly established archive of the village which was donated by a former GP and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
