A second revue, “Sistas in the Name of Love,” featuring hits by such legendary female stars as Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pointer Sisters, will be presented in the theater’s parking lot Saturday through June 6.
By the fall, founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs and Executive Director Julie Leach expect to once again produce shows in their brand new theater building, which was able to host just two productions before the pandemic outbreak.
Leach said seating capacity will be limited for safety at least at the start of the season when the company opens the musical revue “Eubie,” built around the songs of composer Eubie Blake. It opens Oct. 6.
Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe is thrilled to continue its Light Up the Night! open-air concert series with Sistas in the Name of Soul. This celebration of the female soul and R&B artists of the 70s (and some from the late 60s) will run from Saturday, May 8 through Sunday, June 6.
Featured vocalists for the show are Ariel Blue, Syreeta Shonteé, Delores McKenzie and Stephanie Zandra. Audiences will enjoy hits by renowned artists such as Freda Payne, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Donna Summer and The Pointer Sisters. Favorites will include I m So Excited, Midnight Train to Georgia, Respect, Bad Girl and Band of Gold, among many others. The performance will be enhanced by brand new dance routines created by WBTT s Resident Choreographer Donald Frison.

“This year’s lineup includes an incredibly diverse and dynamic selection of narrative, documentary and short films as well as programming for audiences of all ages and backgrounds,” said festival chairman and president Mark Famiglio in a statement. “We look forward to being able to welcome everyone both virtually and in-person to enjoy this year’s selections.”
This year’s opening night film is “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It,” a documentary about the Oscar-winning “West Side Story” actress that premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January. The closing night film is “Dream Horse,” a racehorse underdog story starring Toni Collette and Damian Lewis set for release later in May.
