Bottle effort to return cash locally | News, Sports, Jobs

Katherine Lugar, president and CEO, American Beverage MARQUETTE American Beverage, in partnership with The Recycling Partnership, has announced that communities within Marquette County will receive an investment as a part of the Every Bottle Back initiative, a beverage industry-led effort to reduce the industry’s plastic footprint and keep bottles out of nature. Through The Recycling Partnership, America’s leading beverage companies are investing $68,800 to provide free higher-capacity recycling carts and recycling education materials to 4,450 households in Marquette County, including Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming townships. This investment is expected to yield over 8 million new pounds of recyclable materials over 10 years.

Water wells near airport to be sampled for PFAS | News, Sports, Jobs

Journal Staff NEGAUNEE The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy as well as the Marquette County Health Department, will sample a select group of private drinking water wells surrounding the former Marquette County Airport in Negaunee Township for the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. PFAS chemicals can be present in groundwater and the environment as they are used to manufacture many products in everyday use, said MCHD, which indicated there is currently no evidence of PFAS chemicals in the groundwater within the area of concern. However, PFAS is a component of aircraft firefighting foam known as aqueous film forming foam, which may have been discharged during training and maintenance exercises at the former airport while it was in operation.

Katreena Hite Katreena Hite, a native of Gwinn, has been named one of three Northern Michigan University Social Work Department 2020-21 outstanding graduating graduate students. She will earn a Master of Social Work degree Saturday. Her concentration is in public policy and administration. Hite earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from NMU in 2007. Following a few years in Kansas City, she returned to Marquette County to serve the community as a social worker and change agent. She plans to continue serving the Upper Peninsula community in the mental health system after graduating from NMU. Attending NMU has been a familial tradition for Hite, with her grandfather, uncle and an aunt having earned their bachelor’s degrees from the university. Hite will be the first woman in her immediate family to earn a graduate degree. ERIK FLINN MARQUETTE –Arabella Olson of Negaunee has been named the Northern Michigan University Department of Music 2020-21 outstanding graduating senior. She is graduating Saturday with a bachelor s degree in music, specializing in trombone. While at NMU, Olson participated in several musical ensembles, including Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Brass Quintet and Marching Band. She was selected for the 2019 UPStarts music festival and won first place in the 2018 NMU Music Scholarship Competition. Olson has been accepted for graduate school at the University of Michigan, where she intends to pursue a master s degree in trombone performance. She plans to spend time outdoors during her last summer in the Upper Peninsula.

ABC 10/CW5 A new recycling initiative is coming to Marquette County. The “Every Bottle Back ” initiative is an effort to reduce the industry’s plastic footprint and keep bottles out of the environment. “Specifically, we are talking about getting 4,450 carts out in Ishpeming, Marquette Township and Negaunee Township. The goal is to be able to give people easier access to recycle things. I think as a society we want to do the right thing, we want to recycle, but it has to be convenient,” said Derek Bajema, President of the Michigan Soft Drink Association. “This is opportunity for private industry to work alongside citizens and make it easy for folks. We think this is a great opportunity for Michigan to raise its recycling rate which is needs some work. It’s at 15%, one of the lowest in the nation and the lowest among our neighboring Great Lake States.”
