Newark Town Council agrees residents will pay extra 1.9% of tax in coming financial year

Residents will pay an extra 1.9% of tax to Newark Town Council in the coming financial year, it has been agreed.
Those living in a Band D property will pay £115.30 to the town council, an increase of £2.20.
Members of the council were all in favour of the increase, which will cover expenditure for 2021-22 â predicted to be £992,280, a rise of £33,000.

The budget, approved by full council, included money for Newark Festival and the band concerts as well as Newark In Bloom.

No choice over Newark Cemetery bench

Benches in Newark Cemetery will be provided by the town council in future to ensure their use, quality and style.
Newark Town Council has acted after memorial benches of various styles appeared in the cemetery.
The cost of supplying a uniform bench and setting it concrete will be £1,300.

People can pay £350 to have a plaque in memory of a loved one attached to the bench for ten years, with a maximum of eight plaques per bench.
There is an option to renew the period when the ten years are up.
Newarkâs historic Buttermarketâs redevelopment sees focus move up a floor

Plans for the second phase of Newarkâs historic Buttermarketâs redevelopment are under way.
All the units on the first floor of the centre are now occupied.
The scheme for phase two covers the upper floor of the centre, off Middlegate.

It was outlined at a meeting of Newark and Sherwood District Councilâs economic development committee.
It will see the first floor stripped out to enable access work, as well as work on the main atrium.
Any use for the first floor will not have an impact on these works, but once a use is defined and agreed then the appropriate fit out works will be commissioned.
