Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday announced a new pilot program aimed to deter young adults from gun violence.
The program will pair up youth who are at risk for gun violence with mentors and violence interrupters.
Public Advocate Jumaane Wiliams says the city started a similar program about 10 years ago called the Crisis Management System, which started in Chicago.
He says the city saw gun violence drop drastically. We know it s not enough to just react to violence, we need to advance peace. This pilot program is an opportunity to demonstrate the power of not just the program, but of these principles of public safety,” said Williams.
