Sarpy County board votes to remove Treasurer from office

By Julia Bertino Apr 13, 2021 (Sarpy County, NE) The Sarpy County Board of Commissioners unanimously votes to remove the county treasurer from office. Tuesday afternoon, the board voted 5-0 to remove Brian Zuger from office after they say he misappropriated funds for county school districts. The board’s vote came at the close of an administrative hearing, which was called after a Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts reported numerous deficiencies in the Treasurer’s Office. “It was clear from the evidence presented that the circumstances warranted removal,” Sarpy County Board Chairman Don Kelly said. The Treasurer’s removal is effective immediately. The Board appointed Tracy Jones to serve as Interim Sarpy County Treasurer. The Board now has 45 days to select a permanent replacement, who will serve the remainder of Zuger’s term, which ends in January 2023.

By Terry Leahy Apr 10, 2021 An administrative hearing to determine whether or not to remove Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger from office over an investigation by the Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Sarpy County Boardroom in Papillion. A County spoksperson says the hearing will be held before the County Board, which by statute can remove the Treasurer if that elected person “neglects or refuses to render any account or settlement required by law” or “fails or neglects to account for any balance due the state, county, township, school district, or any other municipal subdivision.”

Sarpy County Board to start legal action against County Treasurer

By Julia Bertino Mar 9, 2021 (Sarpy County, NE) The Sarpy County Board of Commissioners votes unanimously to begin legal action against Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger. Tuesday s move follows the Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts’ attestation of the Treasurer’s Office which the county says found, untimely and miscalculated distributions to school districts and other entities, deficiencies in balancing and reconciliation procedures and other issues. The report did not find any missing funds. The report showed that over $12.5 million in public funds had been impacted. In some cases, school districts were either severely overpaid or underpaid in property tax disbursements.

Sarpy County Board to consider removing County Treasurer from office

By Julia Bertino (Sarpy County, NE) Sarpy County is considering removing the County Treasurer from office. Last week, the Sarpy County Board of Commissioners asked Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger to resign from office. The county says the request came from Board Chairman Don Kelly after the Board reviewed a draft report of the Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts’ attestation of the Treasurer’s Office. The county says Zuger declined to resign. The county says the Board will now consider a resolution at Tuesday’s Board meeting to initiate legal proceedings to remove the Treasurer from office. “We are deeply concerned about the State Auditor s findings, and our primary objective is to ensure Sarpy County is a good steward of the taxpayers’ money,” Kelly said.
