LINCOLN, Neb. (KTIV) - Students in Nebraska are now required to learn about finances in school thanks to the Financial Literacy Act.
The Financial Literacy Act otherwise known as Nebraska Legislature Bill 452 was signed into law by Gov. Pete Ricketts in May.
The law requires Nebraska schools to include financial instruction in grades K-12.
The knowledge and skills will include budgeting, credit, banking accounts, loans, stocks, and insurance. Nebraska State Treasurer John Murante who testified, for the bill, said this was a big priority of his when becoming Nebraska s state treasurer. Kids were graduating from High School without being taught basic financial skills, how to balance a checkbook, how to write a budget, and things like that, so when I became State Treasure I wanted to continue the legacy of my predecessor Don Stenberg by guaranteeing that Nebraska kids this sort of financial literacy education, said Morante.
