2020 UNL graduates invited back for in-person graduation Aug 13-14

After an unusual year of virtual celebrations and online classes, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s 2020 graduates are invited back for an in-person commencement ceremony in August. On Tuesday, the UNL’s Commencement Committee invited last year’s graduates via email to participate in an in-person graduation and walk across the stage the weekend of Aug. 13-14 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Interested students must express their interest by June 4, according to the email.  Students will be sent additional reminders until the deadline, according to Leslie Reed, UNL’s public affairs director. Final details regarding the ceremony will be sent out no later than the week of June 28 to students who express interest, according to the email. 

Data Collection Project to Help Farmers Address Greenhouse Gas Emissions – Advanced BioFuels USA

by Leslie Reed (University of Nebraska–Lincoln/Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute/Nebraska Today) University of Nebraska–Lincoln researchers affiliated with the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute have received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to better quantify carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions connected with corn production fields in the Midwest. The high-tech effort is included in the first phase of the Smart Farms program launched by the Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. The data gathered during the three-year project will help inform American farmers to improve their operations and participate in bioenergy and carbon markets expected to develop in coming years.

UNL to participate in genome sequencing to track COVID-19 variants on campus

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will begin participating in virus sequencing of positive on-campus COVID-19 saliva samples to track the spread of potential COVID-19 variants. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services requested the genomic sequencing to analyze the structure of the virus to discern mutations of COVID-19, which will be done through the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory, according to an update to Nebraska Today’s COVID-19 Digest page on March 28. Privacy laws prohibit identification of individuals who test positive for COVID-19, and results will be communicated privately and securely to UNL community members through the Safer Community app and UNL’s online portal.
