The idea for the project first started when Zendaya contacted
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, asking that if it was possible for him to write and direct a movie during the quarantine. After a few days, Levinson came up with the story for the Zendaya-led film. In order to make this project a reality, Levinson and production partner Ashley Levinson (

In the highly-anticipated film from “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson, filmmaker Malcolm (John David Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) return home from a movie premiere and await his film’s critical response. But the evening takes a turn as revelations about their relationship surface, testing the couple’s love.
The black-and-white film, which is already generating Oscar buzz, was shot in 14 days and 14 nights amid the quarantine lockdown last summer at the Caterpillar House in Carmel, Calif. It was picked up by Netflix in a huge $30 million deal in September.
“We made a bubble. We all quarantined and stayed in this very small area in the middle of nowhere. We shot in this house… we weren’t allowed to leave or go anywhere,” Zendaya told Pharrell’s “OTHERTone” podcast. “I’m doing my own hair and makeup in the bathroom and brought a lot of my clothes to help with set [decoration].”

Zendaya and
John David Washington come to terms with their not-so-perfect relationship in the official trailer for Netflix’s
Malcolm & Marie.
The film, which was shot under strict COVID-19 safety protocols back in June 2020, follows Zendaya and Washington as a Hollywood couple who return home after a “celebratory movie premiere.” Washington, who plays a filmmaker tensely waiting for critics reviews, is seen questioning his girlfriend about their issues.
“What is it Marie? What do you want?” asks Washington’s Malcolm in the promo.
“Really? Do you want to go there?” responds Zendaya’s Marie.
