Sask RCMP want drivers to check highway conditions before heading out

  REGINA Saskatchewan RCMP is encouraging residents to consult the Highway Hotline before venturing out onto highways. The warning follows dangerous road conditions which resulted from a spring storm that brought snow and high winds. Indian Head RCMP responded to two calls overnight. A semi was jackknifed on the highway and another one was in the ditch. There were no serious injuries reported. A part of Highway 1 between Indian Head and Whitewood was closed due to slippery conditions, as of Tuesday evening. Update: Highway 39 closed from Estevan to Midale; travel not recommended advisories still in effect

Police have been at the site.  Travel not recommended warnings are currently in effect for all highways surrounding Estevan, and for much of southeast Saskatchewan. Among those affected are all of the highways – 39, 47 and 18 – in close vicinity of Estevan, with the exception of Highway 39 from Estevan to Midale, which is closed. The advisory for Highway 18 stretches from the junction with Highway 9 to the junction with Highway 6. On Highway 39, it spans from the Canada-U.S. border to Yellow Grass. And on Highway 47, travel is not recommended from the Canada-U.S. border to an area north of the Trans Canada Highway. Among the other highways with travel not recommended warnings are Highway 35 from the Canada-U.S. border to Francis, Highway 350 from the Canada-U.S. border to Torquay, Highway 361 between Highways 9 and 47, Highway 9 south from the junction with Highway 18 to the Canada-U.S. border, and Highway 13 from Carlyle to the junction with Highway 6.

By Drew Postey Apr 13, 2021 5:32 AM Update – Continued snowfall across east central and southeastern Saskatchewan, has created extremely poor driving conditions across the region. RCMP said in a news release Tuesday morning that overnight they received 24 calls for service regarding motor vehicle collisions due to weather. Additionally, they received 15 calls for assistance where vehicles were stuck in the road or in the ditch. Highways throughout the province are still extremely slippery and many highways are closed in the south east corner of the province. This morning RCMP are asking people not to travel, and if they must to check the highway hotline and plan ahead for interruptions, delays or emergencies.
