LOS ANGELES, United States At least 13 people were killed in a traffic collision Tuesday morning near US-Mexico border in US Southern California, according to the local police.

California Highway Patrol Chief Omar Watson said at a press conference Tuesday noon that 12 people died at the scene just outside of Holtville, California, which is about 11 miles (17.7 kilometers) north of the US-Mexico border, and another died after arriving at the hospital.

Four patients from the crash are being treated at Desert Regional Medical Center. Three are in the ICU, DRMC Spokesperson Todd Burke confirms to News Channel 3.
The El Centro Regional Medical Center reported 25 passengers riding in a 1997 Ford Expedition crashed into a semi-truck full of gravel on Tuesday morning. CHP added that the ages of the passengers ranged from 15 to 53 years old.
“It was an unusual number of people in an SUV, but we don’t know who they were,” said Macario Mora, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection in Yuma and El Centro, adding that they could have been farmworkers.

At least 13 people died in a vehicle crash in Imperial County, Calif., on Tuesday, when a crowded Ford Expedition SUV collided with a gravel truck. Local hospital officials initially said 15 people died from the crash, but the California Highway Patrol later lowered the figure.
The terrible collision took place Tuesday morning north of the city of Holtville, according to the Imperial County Fire Department. Emergency teams responded to the collision at the intersection where Norrish Rd. crosses a larger thoroughfare, California State Route 115. At this point, it s unknown whether or not the Expedition stopped at the stop sign, California Highway Patrol Chief Omar Watson said, but it did enter the intersection in front of the big rig.
