Record-breaking wildfires in 2020 turned huge swaths of Western forests into barren burn scars. Those forests store winter snowpack that millions of people rely on for drinking and irrigation water. But with such large and wide-reaching fires, the science on the short-term and long-term effects to the region’s water supplies isn’t well understood.
To understand, and possibly predict what happens after a river’s headwaters goes up in flames, researchers are descending on newly created burn scars across the West to gather data in the hopes of lessening some of the impacts on drinking water systems.

Just beyond the antique stores and bike shops of downtown Grand Junction is a hidden, red-rock world. Towering mesas, sheer cliffs and panoramic views of the valley below are all just a few turns off Interstate 70.

“John Otto is … an interesting character,” she said, smiling from Monument Canyon Trail, one of many routes Otto built.
On May 22, more than 1,000 cyclists are expected to take on the hills and canyons crossed by gravel roads in the desert between Fruita and Utah, but the effort to get the new event to the starting line has had its own ups and downs.
When Morgan Murri, founder of Desert Gravel, the company organizing the event, started planning his Colorado-to-Utah race, called Co2uT, the COVID-19 pandemic was still fresh. He was planning for an October 2020 date and started signing people up on June 1 of last year.
âRight as we were trying to develop this buzz and this idea behind it, as weâre getting energy, COVID is just crushing the world,â Murri said.

HOUSTON, Texas A storm system that unleashed violent tornadoes in Texas has moved into the western Plains and Rocky Mountain states, bringing the threat of feet of snow and blizzard conditions.
More than seven million Americans are under winter weather alerts and about 300,000 are under blizzard warnings on Sunday morning. Parts of the western Plains and Rocky Mountain states reported several inches of snow Saturday, and much more could be on its way on Sunday.
