The Writers Center at Elgin Community College continues the Spring 2021 Reading Series.
Due to ongoing social distancing practices, the events will take place virtually. All readings begin at 7:30 p.m.
Author Kevin Brockmeier joins the series on Thursday, March 18.
Brockmeier is the author of The Ghost Variations: One Hundred Stories, the novels The Illumination, The Brief History of the Dead, and The Truth About Celia, and the story collections Things That Fall from the Sky, and The View from the Seventh Layer.

The Dover Town Library has been recognized once again as a “StarLibrary” by Library Journal. Star designation is received by comparing levels of library service delivery relative to peer libraries nationally.
In its press release, Library Journal noted, “Every public library is a star to the community it serves. Library Journal’s Star Library Ratings and the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service spotlight the best of the best across America. This year, 5,608 U.S. public libraries are scored on the Library Journal Index, and there are 262 Star Libraries.”

Hobo Symbols From The Great Depression: The Secret Language Of America’s Itinerant Workers
In 1972 American industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss (March 2, 1904 – October 5, 1972) published The Symbol Sourcebook, A Comprehensive Guide to International Graphic Symbols.
“A ready reference aid and an inspiration to designers . All in all the best book now available on symbols.” –Library Journal.
This visual database of over 20,000 symbols provided a standard for industrial designers around the world. He included a section of 60 hobo signs, used by ‘transient working class men and women who traveled by train to communicate with one another in the Great Depression, late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
