Enjoy a ruined abbey, an immaculate conservation village, plenty of walking along a river and through woods and some excellent views towards the Howardian Hills. Always interesting. Start the walk with a visit to the Augustian Priory at Kirkham. English Heritage is responsible for its preservation, with the impressive Gatehouse the best preserved feature. I’ve always been interested to know the difference between a priory and an abbey. Looking at the ruins there is no discernible difference. Apparently it is simply that a priory is run by a less important person (a prior not an abbot!) and is likely to be in a more remote setting. The setting is certainly fabulous and the temptation is to linger.
TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of a woman who had a ‘heart of gold . Cliviger Parish councillor Paula Riley lived for her family and was described as a ‘larger than life’ character who ‘made friends everywhere she went’. The 70-year-old, married to Keith, lived in Cliviger and was born and bred in Burnley. She was well-known as volunteer in the community who helped to feed the homeless and her daughter Abbygail Thomas said ‘Burnley will be lost without her.’ The 44-year-old added: “We have been so touched by how many people’s lives she made an impact on over the years.

More than 40 knives handed in to police, including machetes, screwdrivers and garden prunes A massive haul of knives has been handed in to police. Officers in Burnley recovered more than 40 knives and sharp objects, which could be used to commit crime, from the knife bin in Burnley Town Centre. The police say that 49 bladed articles were recovered, including machetes, cheese knives, scissors and screwdrivers. There was also a pair of what looked to be garden pruners. The knife bin has been placed in Centenary Way in the town as part of Operation Edge, in which officers are aiming to tackle and cut-down on knife crime.
