From your friends at the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum
This is the time of the year when the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum is typically poised for what is one of our most important and popular programs. Every third grade classroom, their teacher and chaperones embark on a scheduled Field Trip trek to the Museum and Ten Footer located at 36 William St. in Stoneham.
They are cheerfully welcomed and invited inside the museum for a chance to briefly step back in time.
Under the excellent guidance of the Third Grade School Program Coordinator, Cheryl Werlin and her amazing cadre of retired educators and other experienced volunteers, students are divided into smaller groups and receive a tour of the many exhibits which also includes a Scavenger Hunt.

ASHLAND, Va. â Elizabeth Neal Davenport, better known as Betty, of the Chatham Garden Club, is the winner of the 2021 de Lacy Gray Memorial Medal for Conservation. The award was presented at the Garden Club of Virginia annual meeting hosted by the Ashland Garden Club on May 5.
This award was first presented in 1965 as a memorial to de Lacy Thompson Gray. It is presented to an individual member or member club of the Garden Club of Virginia in recognition of outstanding effort to further the knowledge of our natural resources and encourage their wise use.
Proposed by the Chatham Garden Club, Betty has played a central role in transforming a thirteen hundred acre tract of land on her farm, Banister Bend Farm, into a nature preserve. The goal of the preserve has been to construct, restore and preserve wildlife habitat with a mix of streams, riparian areas, wetlands and adjacent uplands which further enhance and compliment the functions of the Banister River and Stinking Creek. After starting in the fall of 2020, work to demolish the old Rainbow Dam powerhouse in Great Falls was finally becoming visible Wednesday as work was being done on the outside.
From the hills on the north side of the river, heavy equipment could be heard Wednesday, and from the road across the river, that heavy equipment could be seen.
In 2014, NorthWestern Energy bought Rainbow Dam, built between 1908 and 1910, with the hope of finding a new use for the historic powerhouse since a new one had already been constructed.
