Kandal inmates transferred to vocational training prison

A group of 100 inmates were transferred from Kandal provincial prison to Trapeang Phlong prison in Tbong Khmum province to receive vocational training through a rehabilitation programme after they have served their sentences.
Kandal provincial prison director Chat Sineang told The Post that the transfer of all 100 inmates, most of them male and convicted of theft with aggravating circumstances and drug use related offences, took place on February 20.
During the transfer process, security was provided by the Kandal provincial police and prison guards from the Ministry of Interior’s General Department of Prisons.

Five escape, one caught in Kandal jail breakout

Kandal provincial police are hunting for four fugitives still at large after escaping from prison on the night of January 9. A fifth escapee has been re-arrested.
Provincial deputy police chief Chhun Sinat said on January 10 that police and local authorities were actively searching for the missing four and would return them to prison.
“According to a report from the provincial prison, the group of four were charged by the provincial court with drug trafficking and theft with aggravating circumstances,” he said.

The General Department of Prisons has received aid materials from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for distribution to prisoners across the country.
The general department deputy director, Nuth Savna, said the donations consist of face masks, cleaning supplies, and other equipment. A decision concerning their deployment was pending.
“Hygienic supplies for 3,335 detainees were donated in part by the Japanese government through UNODC in response to flooding at M2 [Prey Sar Prison] and in Banteay Meanchey [province]. Now that the floods have receded, we are considering where to distribute the materials,” Savna said, adding that the UN’s response to flooding and Covid-19 prevention in prisons was also closely coordinated with the Intern
