The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has reiterated its commitment to ensuring fairness in commerce and market place, as well as preventing the exploitation of consumers.
Its Executive Vice Chairman, Mr Bababtunde Irukera, made the commitment in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos while speaking on the nature of complaints that could be prosecuted by the FCCPC and the challenges facing the commission.
NAN reports that the FCCPC is formerly known as the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and the CPC Act which was its enabling statue has now been repealed and replaced with the FCCP Act, 2018.

Among those hospitalised are 50 patients undergoing kidney- related treatment, because of complications arising from consumption of the killer drinks, Kano Commissioner for Health, Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa disclosed on Thursday.
Speaking in a video, which was made available to newsmen in Kano State Thursday, the Commissioner explained that the affected persons are being treated in government hospitals.
He cautioned residents on consumption of juice during the period of Ramadan, to avoid catastrophic consequences.
Tsanyawa, in his one minute, twenty one seconds video message said: âAs you are aware, the Ministry of Health had in the recent past announced the outbreak of a strange disease traceable to the consumption of substandard juices.

At least 10 persons have died and 400 are currently hospitalised after drinking expired citric acid powdered drinks in Kano State.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Aminu Ibrahim Tsanyawa on Thursday.
Tsanyawa stated that among those hospitalised are 50 patients undergoing kidney-related treatment, because of complications arising from the consumption of the killer drinks.
The Commissioner spoke in a video, which was made available to journalists in Kano State on Thursday. He explained that the affected persons were being treated in government hospitals.

FCCPC casts shadows on Shoprite exit from Nigeria

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) said it is not aware that retail conglomerate, Shoprite, is exiting Nigeria, but that there is a pending application for merger/acquisition involving it.
The Executive Vice President/Chief Executive Officer, FCCPC, Dr Babatunde Irukera, in a telephone conversation with Vanguard said: “We do not know whether Shoprite is exiting Nigeria or not, but we have a pending application for merger /acquisition by a buyer.
“The media can report anything, what I know is that there is a pending merger/acquisition application in my office. Merger/acquisition applications do not suggest whether a company is leaving or not. What I know is that we have an application for merger/acquisition here.”.
