Chernobyl is showing signs of a possible new nuclear accident, scientists say

feed to stay on top of the news. [It is] like the embers in a barbecue pit, Neil Hyatt, a professor of nuclear materials science and engineering at the University of Sheffield Lecturer, told Science magazine. Fellow scientist, Maxim Saveliev, a senior researcher with the Institute for Safety Problems of Nuclear Power Plants (ISPNPP) in Kyiv, Ukraine, agrees with Hyatt, saying there are many uncertainties, but we can t rule out the possibility of [an] accident. The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident near the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, close to the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian SSR. The April 26, 1986 disaster is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history for the amount of money it cost and the number of lives lost. The Chernobyl disaster is one of two energy-related accidents that were rated a level 7, the maximum.

Chernobyl on the Brink of Another Disastrous Explosion; Radioactive Waste Continues to Smolder

May 15, 2021 05:30 PM EDT Tons of nuclear fuel in the wrecked basement of the plant has started their reaction again, and it s displaying no signs of stopping. (Photo : Getty Images) Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant  In Ukraine, nuclear reactions are smoldering again in a basement of the wrecked Chernobyl nuclear power plant that is unreachable, according to news reports. Researchers keeping an eye on the plant - which exploded infamously in a 1986  lethal meltdown - have identified a stable spike in the number of neutrons in an underground room known as 305/2. The room is filled with heavy rubble, hiding a radioactive mush of graphite, zirconium, uranium, and sand that flows into the basement of the plant like lava, before solidifying into formations known as fuel-containing materials (FCMs). Rising neutron levels show that these FCMs are going through new fission reactions, as neutrons hit and split the nuclei of uranium atoms, producing energy.

Chernobyl: Nuclear Fuel Smolders Again, Another Accident Is Possible

AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky Nuclear reactions are smoldering again in an inaccessible basement at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It s a possibility that another nuclear accident could take place, a researcher told Science magazine. Any potential explosion, however, would likely be less catastrophic than the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Nuclear reactions are smoldering again in uranium fuel masses deep inside an unreachable basement room of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, LiveScience reported. A rising number of neutrons can signal new fission reactions. Researchers at the catastrophic 1986 explosion site have recently detected a steady spike in neutron numbers in an underground room called 305/2, LiveScience said.
