In a crowded field on the right of politics, parties are trying to woo tens of thousands of people who voted UKIP in Wales five years ago.
An academic study suggests those voters had overwhelmingly switched to the Conservatives by the following year.
If the Tories can retain their support, it will help them close the gap with Labour in key battleground seats.
It won seven seats, thanks to more than 132,000 regional votes.

Orlando Esiesa Tobar, 29, who goes by the moniker Chaparro, is one of the two men accused of kidnapping Conzuelo Nicole Solorio-Romero, 25, from her home in Kearns on Feb. 6. A total of six people have been charged in connection with her disappearance and death.
Tobar, along with Jorge Rafael Medina-Reyes, 21, took Solorio-Romero to a residence in West Valley City, 1136 W Elba Ave., where Tobar questioned her regarding what she told police that resulted in one of his close associates being arrested and taken into federal custody, according to charging documents.

Legislation intended to force the nation s richest Americans to pay taxes on inherited fortunes would instead drive hard-working farmers to sell land that families have owned for generations, ag and business groups say.
Five leading U.S. senators, including former Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, proposed legislation last month that they say would close a loophole that allows wealthy Americans to sidestep paying taxes on massive inheritances. It could potentially impact farmers, whose valuable land would be taxed when passed on to the next generation.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent, said it s absurd that many of the country’s wealthiest people never pay a cent of capital gains taxes on millions or even billions they inherit, while working people pay taxes on every check they receive.”
