OPINION: It was mid-September 2015 and I had not slept in six weeks, except for one night, which I still remember as the mysteriously offered slice of heavenly respite in an otherwise bewilderingly brutal period of insomnia. If not sleeping for six weeks sounds like drama and hyperbole, it isn’t. What you, if you are lucky, take for granted to be sleep – that thing that makes you feel you have fuel in the tank and that your systems have been restored – can actually evade people for days, weeks, even months. However, it is only recently that insomnia and sleep disturbances have started to be recognised as detriments to workplace wellbeing and safety. Estimates show that approximately 15% of the workforce may suffer from insomnia or sleep disturbance. Studies have shown that mean productivity loss was significantly higher for a group of workers suffering insomnia (6.1%) compared to those who were good sleepers (2.5%).

When I told people I was moving to Denmark, many mentioned hygge, the weather, and pickled herring. They didn’t mention… the duvets. As a British guy moving in with my Danish girlfriend in Copenhagen I was shocked to see that on our bed were two separate duvets. To her, this was totally normal, but to me it made me question the strength of our relationship: Why wouldn’t we have the intimacy of sharing the same duvet together?
