It’s an easy life.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of
Three Soldiers, the first celebrated novel by the prolific American novelist John Dos Passos (1896-1970). The writer is probably best known for his epic
U.S.A., a trilogy of novels experimental in form and highly critical of American capitalism and culture.
Three Soldiers can be held up to
U.S.A. and seen as the work of a younger Dos Passos, one who is still finding his novelist’s voice, but the earlier novel is itself an accomplished work worthy of a reader’s attention in 2021.

Timeless Wisdom: The Age of Postman
When I was 19, I read a book that would forever change my life. It was Neil Postman’s “Amusing Ourselves to Death.” Though published in 1985, with each passing year, its insights have become more and more relevant and ominous.
Postman contends the following: electronic media is dumbing us down, transforming our dialogue into mere forms of entertainment driven by profit rather than substance, which in turn prevents us from not only speaking like adults, but even thinking like one. He traces this phenomenon in the realm of politics, religion, and education.
The introduction makes his terrifyingly prophetic thesis plain:

Evidence suggests the answer to that question is a thunderous “Yes!”
Let’s consider just one example.
Since Inauguration Day, our government is creating programs that will cost more trillions of dollars than the trillions we’ve already spent. Troops remain stationed in Washington D.C. to no discernible purpose, experts daily contradict one another on how to battle the pandemic, and Congress is pushing the Equality Act, which will likely destroy women’s sports, restrict religious beliefs and free speech, and negatively impact the freedoms of health care professionals. Clear thinking among the political set appears to have gone AWOL.
