Thrive column: Removing the stigma surrounding mental illness
Tracey Gruver, Thrive
The purpose of this column is to educate people about mental health. I write each month because I want more people to know that mental illness is not as much of a rarity as some may think, that it can be treated, and, most of all, I hope to help remove the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
What does it mean when I say there is a stigma surrounding mental illness? The word stigma literally means “a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.”
Why should a person with a mental illness feel disgraced? If you were diagnosed with a heart condition or cancer, would you feel disgraced? Probably not. Why, then, is mental illness so different?
