The 'Indianized' Landscape of Massachusetts

Moswetuset Hummock, 2020. [Mark Jarzombek] My wife and I, as relative newcomers to Massachusetts, decided to immerse ourselves more firmly in local history, and an internet search brought us to a website about Moswetuset Hummock. The next day, we drove to the South Boston shore, parked in a small lot, and walked up the hill. Heavily wooded, the hummock faces the Atlantic, backing into a tidal flat at the mouth of the Neponset River. It is not particularly tall, but despite ongoing efforts to drain the surrounding marsh, it dominates the landscape. Beside the trail stands a stone marker stating that this was the “home of the Moswetuset after whom the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is named.”

Boston.com readers share hiking trails discovered during the pandemic

“ [Coggshall Park] is awesome!” a reader wrote. “There are some great trails around a small and beautiful lake. We love the wildlife we saw snakes, turtles, ducks, geese, and frogs on our last visit.” Advertisement “Located amongst beautiful farms, this lesser-known trail offers all types of activities (cross country skiing, snow shoeing). It also has a disc golf course. We did this hike the weekend before Thanksgiving to get into the Thanksgiving spirit. It was fun to look for the markers on the self-guided interpretive map, which provided interesting information about the biodiversity and history of the area. The trail is along the reservoir most of the way. The view of the reservoir is beautiful and we saw a heron on the water,” a reader wrote of Carver’s

Infection in his feet led to amputations and two strokes. Johnson is mostly paralyzed. Most of his career was outdoors, said his son, Marcquis Johnson.  Now with him being stuck in a room, it s hard for him. Marshall Johnson has been out of work since May and staying at a Danvers rehabilitation and nursing facility since October. Marcquis Johnson and his siblings have stepped in to help financially so that their father can focus on recovery.

'We Did Say Take A Hike Last Night': Hikers Bid Adieu To Last Year

Married couple Melissa McGrew (left) and Andrew Untch (right) haven t missed the tradition of hiking on New Year s Day since they ve been together. (Quincy Walters/WBUR) Some people ventured into the new year by venturing into the wilderness Friday. Each year, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation encourages people to go for a hike on Jan. 1. Married couple Melissa McGrew and Andrew Untch haven t missed the tradition since they ve been together. And a pandemic wasn t going to stop them. The last day of 2020 marked 17 years since they first met by happenstance at a baggage claim at Logan airport. Baggage did take extra long that night, McGrew remembered, standing at an entrance of the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton. We ended up taking the subway.
