Microsoft to expand R&D efforts in Taiwan with hiring drive

Taipei, Feb. 5 (CNA) American tech giant Microsoft Corp. will hire about 100 professionals in Taiwan in 2021 to expand its research and development efforts in the country, the company said in a statement issued Friday.
Microsoft said the company sees Taiwan as a global R&D base focused on developing key new technologies, and is determined to help Taiwanese businesses apply forward-looking know-how to improve their operations.
Expressing its faith in Taiwan s strong integration of hardware and software systems and its diversified talent pool, Microsoft said it will recruit 100 professionals with an eye toward advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as computer vision (helping computers see and process images) and user intent.
AWS goes after Google Maps Platform with debut of Amazon Location Service

Amazon Web Services Inc. today introduced the preview version of Amazon Location Service, a new offering in its cloud platform that enables companies to add location-based capabilities such as package tracking to their applications.
The offering made its debut during the company’s virtual re:Invent event. It’s poised to create more competition for Google LLC in the location data market. The search giant’s cloud business, one of AWS’ main rivals, provides a developer version of its ubiquitous Google Maps service called Google Maps Platform that companies can integrate into their applications.
