Bhaturam Rabha (45) and Mithun Mallick (22) had been trampled by wild pachyderm at Govindpur in Rangagara. Residents say that the two were trampled by a loner elephant. A week ago, one Dilip Das lost his life in a similar incident at Mornoi in Goalpara. The Goalpara district has become a hot spot of frequent human-elephant interaction over the years. Clearing of forests and destruction of the elephant corridors for cashew plantations, rubber plantations and other developmental activities in the Assam-Meghalaya border are drivers of human-elephant conflict manifesting in crop-raiding, damage to property and loss of human and elephant lives in the district.
