SHIMLA: Opposing the construction of hydropower projects in HP, green activists said the dam building agenda is being implemented with impunity in the Himalayas to generate 1,18,000 MW of electricity through hundreds of large, medium and small hydropower projects. In Himachal, projects worth 10,000 MW have been set up at the cost of forests and farms.
They have also caused landslides, soil erosion and impacted riverine ecosystems, they said. According to the activists, the Avay Shukla Committee report presented to the Himachal Pradesh high court in 2011 recommended a moratorium on new hydropower projects in the state for this reason. However, they said, the state government dismissed the report completely.

The glacier break in Uttarakhand s Chamoli district that resulted in an avalanche and huge floods have killed at least 14 people and over 170 people are missing.
The natural disaster, on Sunday morning, ended in flooding in the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga. While thousands have been evacuated, homes have been washed away in the floods. Reports suggest that the hydel projects of Rishiganga and NTPC have sustained severe damage.
Here s what we know so far: News18 has learnt that at least 14 bodies were discovered by the the Indo-Tibetan Border Force (ITBP) and that 170 people are still missing 22 from Rishiganga hydro power project and 148 from the the National Thermal Power Corporation s hydro power project that was under construction.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Forty hydropower projects with a capacity of 500 megawatts have remained stalled in the state for years due to strikes and contractors laziness. The KSEB meeting held yesterday decided to complete six of these on time. These include the 60 MW Pallivasal Extension Scheme, the 40 MW Thottiyar Project, the 6 MW Chathankottunada, the 24 MW Bhoothathankettu and the 24 MW Peringalkuthu. This is the second time this government has decided to complete the work on time.
Construction of the Pallivasal project began on March 1, 2007. As per the agreement, the project was to be commissioned within four years. In 13 years, only 75% have been completed. Generators and accessories imported in 2010 are damaged by rust.
