Voice of the Consumer: Be wary of scammers looking to take advantage of CARES Act funding

In the year since the bill passed, scammers have been taking advantage of it. According to the IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division, the agency investigated more than 350 tax and money laundering cases nationwide, totaling $440 million. Most of the investigations focused on fraudulently obtained loans, credits and payments. “IRS Criminal Investigation’s mission is to support our nation’s tax system, which in turn helps support the priorities outlined in the CARES Act,” said Special Agent in Charge Andy Tsui from the IRS’s Denver Field Office. “Our special agents will use their financial expertise to investigate and recommend for prosecution those who attempt to defraud the CARES Act programs that were established to help taxpayers in need.”

A man and a woman suspected of breaking into about 30 vehicles in a Fountain apartment complex were arrested Friday, according to police. Justin Cook, 27, and Jessica Grider, 26, are being held in county jails while they await pending charges, according to a news release. Officers responded to a 4:40 a.m. call about vehicle break-ins in the parking lot of Mesa Ridge Apartments at 775 Pitcher Point, and arrested Cook and Grider shortly after they arrived at the complex, police said. “The suspects gained entry into approximately thirty unlocked vehicles,” the release stated. The thieves had stolen several purses, credit cards, military equipment and other items, police said. When officers went to the suspects’ home, they found more stolen property, including firearms.

Man arrested south of Colorado Springs after head-on collision with police vehicle

A man who rammed a Fountain police cruiser head-on with a stolen car Friday has been arrested. Gabino Detorre-Lopez, 23, could face multiple felony charges, including second-degree assault on a peace officer and felony eluding, according to law enforcement. Two thieves stole two vehicles in Colorado Springs on Friday between 6 and 7 a.m. while the cars were running unattended, Fountain police spokeswoman Lisa Schneider said. Colorado Springs police informed local law enforcement about the thefts. At about 7:30 a.m. a Fountain police officer spotted one of the vehicles near U.S. 85 and Southmoor Drive and tried to stop the vehicle, which drove into a parking lot after a brief chase. The driver crashed head on into a patrol car in the parking lot, then jumped out and ran into Security Mobile Home Park, Schneider said. Police believed the man had a gun in his hand.
