State Representative Ed Gainey won the endorsement of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee in his bid for mayor of Pittsburgh Sunday, holding off a spirited challenge from Tony Moreno.
Incumbent Bill Peduto, who both men hope to beat on May 18, did not seek the endorsement. But moments after his 326-224 win, Gainey said the endorsement “speaks volumes. This is the first time I can [remember] them endorsing an African American to be mayor of the city of Pittsburgh. This is just more momentum, he added. We’ve got to unite this city … in the best way possible, and I’ve done that my whole career.”

Pittsburgh mayoral candidate Tony Moreno took to Facebook with a challenge Thursday, asking his competitors to be civil, during the campaign.
Moreno, 51, of Brighton Heights is a retired Pittsburgh police officer. He’s running against incumbent Mayor Bill Peduto, 56, of Point Breeze and five-term state Rep. Ed Gainey, 51, of Lincoln Lemington.
“I am shocked and disappointed at the events that took place this past Saturday,” Moreno wrote, referencing a Saturday confrontation between Gainey’s campaign manager and a Democratic political activist. “The fact that a civilized and productive exercise of our city’s democratic process instead became a setting for personal attacks, harassment, and even physical violence is terribly sad.

Old social media posts by Pittsburgh mayoral candidate Tony Moreno that support former President Donald Trump were condemned by the city’s Democratic Committee chairman less than a week before the party announces its slate of endorsed candidates.
Moreno, 51, a retired city police officer from Brighton Heights, is one of two candidates seeking the committee’s endorsement, which will be announced Sunday.
The other is state Rep. Ed Gainey, 51, of Lincoln-Lemington. Mayor Bill Peduto and North Side businessman Will Parker, 41, are also running for the Democratic nomination in the May 18 primary, but aren’t seeking the committee’s endorsement.
