(WALB) - On Thursday, Chief Justice Harold Melton extended the Statewide Judicial Emergency for another month. This is the 13th time Melton has extended the order. The statewide judicial emergency was declared more than a year ago on March 14 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a press release, the Supreme Court of Georgia said Thursday’s order is nearly identical to the previous order Melton signed last month extending the emergency. The key difference is this order gives notice that the statutory deadlines for when detained criminal defendants must have their cases heard by a grand jury. are expected to be reinstated on May 14.

The first jury trials in more than a year in Newton County are set to begin next week. Juries are set to be chosen under COVID-19 protocols for social distancing and mask-wearing beginning Monday, April 12, in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit. District Attorney Randy McGinley said cases awaiting jury trials in Newton County courts will be allowed to proceed after being postponed since March 2020.  Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton issued an order March 9 allowing jury trials to resume in Georgia.
