Canadian judge denies bail for fashion mogul Peter Nygard

WINNIPEG A judge on Friday denied bail to Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard, who was arrested last month on U.S. charges that alleging he sexually abused women and girls he lured with promises of opportunities in fashion and modeling over the last 25 years.
That means Nygard, 79, will await his extradition hearings in jail. Nygard was arrested in December in Winnipeg and faces nine counts in the Southern District of New York.
Justice Shawn Greenberg said she has concerns about a history of Nygard not showing up to court and using employees to tamper with evidence.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - Canadian fashion designer Peter Nygard was denied bail on Friday in a Winnipeg, Manitoba courtroom, after spending nearly two months in jail on a U.S. extradition request.
Canadian police arrested Nygard in Winnipeg on Dec. 14 at the request of U.S. justice officials under the countries extradition treaty.
Nygard faces nine counts of sex trafficking and racketeering in the United States. Nygard, who appeared in court by video, has denied all the allegations.
Justice Shawn Greenberg said she was concerned Nygard, 79, could tamper with witnesses if released.
Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard was denied bail by a Manitoba judge Friday, meaning he could spend years in jail while fighting extradition to the United States, where he faces charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and other crimes that are said to have victimized dozens of women and teenage girls.
The 79-year-old multimillionaire is accused of using his company s influence, money and employees to recruit adult and minor-aged female victims over a 25-year period in the United States, the Bahamas and Canada for his sexual gratification and that of his associates, according to a nine-count federal indictment filed by the U.S. attorney s office in Manhattan, New York, in December.
