SC suspends LHC proceedings against Punjab govt July 4, 2021 LAHORE: The Supreme Court (SC) Saturday suspended proceedings before the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the Punjab government for not implementing a decision of the LHC administration committee for making special judicial allowance part of the pension of the judicial officers. LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan had warned on Friday of summoning Chief Minister Usman Buzdar if an ordinance for implementation of the decision was not issued by Saturday. LHC orders govt to provide free burial facility in cemeteries July 4, 2021 LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan has ordered the Punjab government to conduct free burial in cemeteries. The court imposed a ban on collection of money for burial in cemeteries across the province. Justice Qasim Khan issued an eight-page written verdict on Saturday. The LHC CJ observed that the Punjab government should amend the law regarding burial of the deceased. He also cited Hadiths and international laws in the verdict. The CJ wrote in the decision that citizens pay taxes to the government all their lives for buying various items. Even in death they are charged money in the name of graves and other things, he added. It is a responsibility of the government to bear the cost of burial. The law should be amended so that the administration could provide free transport to the cemetery for burial, he added.

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan has directed the Punjab government to introduce public-private partnership and engage charitable personalities to facilitate the burial of the dead belonging to common families in a respectful manner. He also directed the government to ensure that two model graveyards be established each in Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi divisions on the pattern of such facilities set up in Lahore city. “To uphold the dignity of a dead person, it is the duty of state to ensure provision of an appropriate place for burial and this responsibility is either to be discharged by the state itself through its local government bodies or departments,” the chief justice observed in a verdict issued on a public interest petition regarding shortage of graveyards proportionate to the number of people residing in Lahore.
