Deirdre Morley: Mother found not guilty of murdering children

BBC News Published A 44-year-old woman charged with murdering her three children has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. Conor, nine , Darragh, seven, and Carla McGinley, three, were found found dead at their house in Newcastle, County Dublin in January 2020. Their mother, Deirdre Morley, was acquitted of all three counts on Thursday. Mr Justice Paul Coffey said there was no contest about the verdict. The court had heard Ms Morley had a severe psychotic depressive illness. The jury of ten men and two women were told they must be satisfied, on the balance of probabilities, that Ms Morley was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the killings.

Judge tells jury in Deirdre Morley trial they can bring majority verdict

Jury returns verdict in trial of woman who killed her three children

Jury returns verdict in trial of woman who killed her three children Court   ); Paediatric nurse Deirdre Morley, who smothered her three young children at their family home, has been found not guilty of their murders by reason of insanity. The 12 jurors accepted the evidence given by two psychiatrists that the accused, who specialised in renal care at Our Lady s Hospital in Crumlin, was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the three killings and fulfilled the criteria for the special verdict. The case, Ms Morley s defence counsel had told the jury, was a tragedy of enormous proportions , with the tragic irony of the accused being someone who had committed her entire professional life to the care of children as a paediatric nurse.
