Dems seek Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett recusal in big case

WASHINGTON – Three Democratic lawmakers are pressing Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett to recuse herself from one of the court s highest profile cases this term because of her ties to the conservative nonprofit that filed the appeal.  A foundation associated with Americans for Prosperity, which acknowledged spending seven figures on advertising to support Barrett during her confirmation battle last fall, has brought a case that will be argued at the nation s highest court next week challenging a requirement that it disclose major donors to state regulators in California. In a three-page letter reviewed by USA TODAY, the lawmakers assert the Americans for Prosperity campaign in support of Barrett represents the appearance of a conflict in the pending dispute involving the group s public charity, the Americans for Prosperity Foundation. Both groups are backed by Republican megadonor Charles Koch.

Sen Roy Blunt: Don t pack Supreme Court – here s the truth behind Democrats radical push for reform

South Carolina Republican joins Justice with Judge Jeanine to discuss the left s push to expand the Supreme Court Last year, prominent Democrats attempted to stop the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court by threatening to pack the court in retaliation to her nomination. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told his colleagues that nothing is off the table next year. President Joe Biden made good on that promise with the creation of a 36-member commission to reform the court. The only thing Democrats truly think needs to be reformed is the number of liberal justices on the court. That’s why the options the president wants his hand-picked Supreme Court czars to map out include packing the court with more members and setting term limits for justices.

Hank Johnson (Ga.), and Rep. Mondaire Jones (N.Y.) introduced legislation today to expand the U.S. Supreme Court from 9 seats to 13, a step that many Republicans and conservatives have denounced as packing the court to help keep Democrats in power indefinitely.  The House Judiciary Committee, headed by Nadler, said in a press release, This bill would restore balance to the nation’s highest court after four years of norm-breaking actions by Republicans led to its current composition and greatly damaged the Court’s standing in the eyes of the American people.

Liberal Justice Breyer, Late Justice Ginsburg Opposed Packing SCOTUS

15 Apr 2021 Left-wing Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer recently warned against leftists’ calls to pack the Court and before her death, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also voiced opposition to it. In an address on April 6, Breyer said he aimed to “make those whose initial instincts may favor important structural or other similar institutional changes, such as forms of ‘court-packing,’ think long and hard before embodying those changes in law,” according to Breitbart News. The implications would be immense and undermine citizens’ confidence in the courts and “in the rule of law itself,” the 82-year-old explained. “If the public sees judges as ‘politicians in robes,’ its confidence in the courts, and in the rule of law itself, can only diminish, diminishing the court’s power, including its power to act as a ‘check’ on the other branches,” he noted.

Justice Breyer: Structural Alteration of SCOTUS Will Erode Trust That Court is Guided by Legal Principles

By Emma Riley | April 16, 2021 | 10:24am EDT Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer. (Getty Images) (CNS News) Perhaps in anticipation of lawmakers attempts to expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court, Associate Justice Stephen Breyer said in a speech at Harvard Law School that structural alteration of the high court could erode the trust Americans have that the court is guided by legal principle, not politics. Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation on Thursday, April 15, to expand the number of Supreme Court justices from 9 to 13. In his April 6 speech at Harvard Law School, Associate Justice Stephen Breyer the court’s senior Democratic appointee said that advocates of court-packing and other structural changes in the court should “think long and hard before they embody those changes in law.”
