Orban Party Leaves Largest EU Parliament Group After Years of Conflict 4 Mar 2021 Fidesz, the party of Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has left the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament after the group voted to allow members to strip the privileges of other members. Prime Minister Orbán wrote a letter to the chairman of the EPP, Manfred Weber of the Angela Merkel aligned CSU party, announcing that Fidesz MEPs would leave the group, accusing the EPP of “trying to mute and disable our democratically elected MEPs” as many were concerned with the Wuhan virus pandemic.

Five countries taking a hard stance against Big Tech

Print this article Countries are curbing the power of Big Tech companies such as Facebook and Google by regulating anti-competitive behavior and content moderation, imposing high fines for rule violations, and threatening to break them up. Much of this global activity has influenced U.S. lawmakers to move to crack down on tech firms. Federal agencies are suing tech giants, including Facebook and Google, for anti-competitive behavior. Meanwhile, members of Congress have introduced bipartisan legislation regulating online platforms and are considering breaking some firms up altogether. Democrats and Republicans in Congress are also focused on trying to overhaul or eliminate Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the liability shield for digital platforms, which the GOP says allows social media companies to censor conservative speech online unfairly.

Senators Introduce PROMISE Act Targeting Political Bias in Big Tech Companies

Senators Introduce PROMISE Act Targeting Political Bias in Big Tech Companies Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), and Mike Braun (R-Ind.) on Feb. 24 introduced new legislation targeting political bias in big tech companies. The PROMISE Act (pdf), which stands for Promoting Responsibility Over Moderation In the Social-media Environment Act, is designed to hold big tech companies accountable to their promises to not operate their social medial platforms with political bias, according to a news release from Sen Lee’s office. Specifically, the act would require big tech companies to disclose their moderation policies to the public including: categories of information not permitted on their platform or subject to moderation, the process used in moderating content, and the notification process used to inform users of a moderation action taken as well as the reason for the decision.
