Firefighters doused smoldering ashes Tuesday at the source of a fire from the previous day at a South Barrington-area landscaping company that also charred about 30 acres of nearby Spring Creek Forest Preserve.
Firefighters responded at 3:42 p.m. Monday to a fire started by spontaneous combustion of mulch piles at Down to Earth landscaping in unincorporated Cook County on Old Sutton Road, East Dundee Fire Protection District Chief Jason Parthun said. The wind carried the embers and spread the fire northeast, he said.

LONG GROVE - A fire was reported at a home in the 3100 block of Cuba Road in Long Grove just before 2 p.m. Thursday.
Fire officials say the homeowners were doing some brush burning in the backyard when an ember from that fire likely ignited the roof.
Multiple fire departments responded to extinguish the fire.

A little over one year ago, the world as we know it changed forever with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. But now we are at the dawn of a return to a small sense of normalcy.
And while schools have started a transition to more in-person learning and sporting events, other treasured traditions like prom are still up in the air.
Feedback from area high schools indicates a range of events from no prom celebration once again to small, on-campus mini-events that will be closely monitored for safety, with the larger hope of a return to normalcy in the spring of 2022.

bridge in Long Grove, Illinois, has had an ongoing battle with trucks over the decades, often finding itself on the losing end.
In 2018, it appeared the death blow had been dealt to the 8-foot, 6-inch-tall Buffalo Creek Bridge. A large truck destroyed the entire wooden cover, just days after the one-lane, metal Pratt truss bridge had been named to the National Register of Historic Places.
