A car crashed into the facade and parklet of Lord Windsor coffee shop on the corner of Third Street and Cerritos Avenue Monday afternoon, breaking the front window and damaging the shop’s parklet, according to eyewitness accounts on social media.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to a call of a car that crashed into a building at 3:30 p.m., according to a department spokesperson. The crash occurred just after the shop closed for the day. Two cars were involved, and one patient was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to authorities.
At the scene, firefighters also encountered a sheared fire hydrant, according to LBFD spokesman Capt. Jack Crabtree. Photos and videos posted on social media show a fountain of water raining onto the street in front of the coffee shop.

On May 6, 2021 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Special Investigation Detectives located and arrested Charles Ray Jones, a 44-year-old individual experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. He was arrested on the 100 block of the Promenade. Jones was booked on one count of murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail in the Long Beach City Jail.
Through their investigation, detectives discovered evidence linking Jones to the fatal Oct. 6, 2020 stabbing of a male adult victim.
The victim has been identified as 41-year-old Nilton Cardoso, an individual experiencing homelessness in Long Beach.
Cardoso and Jones were known to each other and may have been involved in a dispute when the assault occurred. The investigation remains active as detectives determine whether more persons were involved in the attack.

Officers responded to a call reporting a robbery at about 7 p.m. in the 1400 block of Cherry Avenue near a bakery in the MacArthur Park area, police said. Upon arrival, police said they discovered a man who had sustained an injury to his head.
Police said that two men had approached the victim and struck him on the head with a “blunt object” and knocked him unconscious. Once he regained consciousness, the victim discovered that his money and cell phone had been stolen, LBPD Lt. Ryan Watson said.
The Long Beach Fire Department was on the scene to treat his injuries, but the victim was not taken to the hospital, police said.

Officially called the Police and Fire Memorial, the structure is made up of small triangles meant to look like folded flags engraved with the names of 14 fire and 29 police service members that have died in the line of duty since each department’s inception in Long Beach.
Flags, folded 13 times over in the form of a triangle, are traditionally given to families of those who died. Some of the memorial’s bronze flags remain blank.

“To every family, friend and colleague, this memorial is something to be proud of,” said Mayor Robert Garcia, adding that the hope is no new names will ever need to be added.
