TIMMINS The outbreak at Extendicare Kapuskasing stabilized Tuesday, with no new cases beyond the 32 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among residents and 13 cases among employees. The Timmins and District Hospital sent some of its staff to help with the situation and will be working with Extendicare to conduct a thorough infection control assessment. Of the 16 COVID-19-related deaths to date in the Porcupine Health Unit area, seven are linked to the outbreak at Kapuskasing Extendicare. Requests for interviews from Extendicare, Timmins and District Hospital and the Porcupine Health Unit, were denied. But Mushkegowuk-James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin said the town of 9,000 people is finding the outbreak at the facility concerning, where, he said, there are 49 residents.

The running total of COVID-19 cases since the arrival of the pandemic last year in this region is 280.
The Porcupine Health Unit announced one new case at Extendicare Kapuskasing yesterday, bringing it to that mark. The home says two of its residents have been transferred to Sensenbrenner Hospital.

The Porcupine Health Unit reported the deaths Wednesday afternoon.
Extendicare Kapuskasing had reported three deaths among its residence on its Facebook page earlier in the day.
“We are saddened to confirm two of our residents who were COVID-positive passed away yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, and an additional positive resident who was receiving care in hospital passed away overnight.”

The Porcupine Health Unit revealed those grim numbers along with word of five more cases in that general area. Two of them are part of that same institutional outbreak. Another between Fauquier and Opasatika is classified as being from contact with another case. The other two are in the Hearst-Hornepayne area. One is from contact, the other cause is being investigated.
The Porcupine Health Unit region has now recorded 285 cases and 20 deaths.
