DAMASCUS: President Bashar al-Assad dismissed criticism of Syria’s presidential election on Wednesday as voters flocked to the polls in government-held areas despite Western accusations it was neither “free nor fair”.
“Your opinions have zero value,” Assad said, after voting with his British-born wife Asma in the Damascus suburb of Douma, a key rebel stronghold until its recapture by government forces three years ago.
The United States and the European Union said on Tuesday the election was “neither free nor fair,” and Syria’s fragmented opposition has called it a “farce”. But they will watch powerless as Assad prepares to renew his grip on power.

TAIPEI (Reuters): Millions of Covid-19 vaccine doses are on their way to Taiwan, the health minister said on Tuesday (May 25), as he extended virus-related restrictions until the middle of June even though the trend in new infections is falling.
Having spent months keeping the virus at bay with life relatively normal compared with many other places, Taiwan is dealing with a spike in domestic infections, exacerbated by a low vaccination rate of only about 1% of its population.

VIENNA: The UN nuclear watchdog and Iran on Monday said an agreement to monitor Tehran s activities would be extended by a month till June 24, as world powers hold talks to revive a 2015 nuclear deal.
Global powers have been meeting in Vienna since early April in a bid to bring Washington back to the deal which the US left in 2018.
The withdrawal under then president Donald Trump and re-imposition of sanctions led to Iran stepping up its nuclear activities.
