On the heels of the Czech Film Critics’ Awards comes the annual Czech Lion ceremony, which sees members of the Czech Film and Television Academy casting their votes to celebrate the domestic cinema of 2020. The Czech Film Critics’ Awards (see the news) had already singled out
Agnieszka Holland’s period biopic

Shadow Country had been leading the nominations here. Sláma’s first foray into period film, a collective portrait of a Czech village near the German border during the events of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, won a total of six awards, including Best Actress (for both the leading and supporting roles), Best Screenplay and Best Editing.

The 28th edition of the main national film awards, the Czech Lions, takes place in Prague on Saturday night, which Charlatan, Shadow Country and Havel among the main contenders. But what is the favourite to win? I discussed the 2021 Czech Lion Awards with Czech Radio film journalist Kristina Roháčová.
“In terms of Covid, it might seem like there weren’t that many films to choose from this year.

“But I think that we’ve actually seen some really solid contenders, which have done well even on the festival circuit abroad.
“There’s of course Charlatan, the Jan Mikolášek biopic from Agniezska Holland, which made the Oscar shortlist for Best International Film last month and is a personal favourite of mine.
Director Bohdan Sláma’s Shadow Country (Krajina ve stínu) won the 2020 annual Czech Film Critics’ Awards on Saturday. The black and white film which depicts life in a Czech border village during the most tumultuous period in twentieth century history also received an award in the best female actress category. Ivan Trojan, who played the role of healer Jan Mikolášek in Agnieszka Holland’s Charlatan (Šarlatán), took the award for best male actor.
Top actors and filmmakers gathered at Prague’s Archa Theatre to attend the annual Czech Film Critics’ Awards on Saturday, this year in a more cosy setting due to the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.
