Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (ZGH) has announced that its total group sales exceeded 2.1 million units in 2020. Under the holding group are three subsidiary units – Geely Auto Group, Volvo Car Group and Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group – and eight brands.
Over 2.1 million is a good result for the Geely group as 2020 was a year dominated by the global coronavirus pandemic and many parts of the world had work stoppage to control the spread of Covid-19, including its home market of China.
Geely says that its brands performed resiliently amid the volatility of 2020 and “in the second half of the year, our brands saw a strong return to growth compared to the same period in the previous year”. ZGH did not share the exact 2020 sales figure beyond “exceeded 2.1m”, so perhaps the final tally was just shy of the 2019 total of 2.178 million units. Still a strong result with context.
Geely and Foxconn teamed up to produce EVs for other companies but both of them had the plan to offer open-source electric car platforms to the market.
Smart is ready to move on from its established image in the car industry and be more than just a minicar-maker who builds funny-looking vehicles.
Starting with its next new model, Smart will make an upmarket shift, while at the same time attempting not to interfere with Mercedes A-Class and GLA sales. According to sales VP Daniel Lescow, Smart is ready to unveil its first SUV.

Automobilwoche, stating that this vehicle will be built on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture, which will also underpin several cars under the Geely brand, reports Autonews Europe.
This platform will also be used for at least one more Smart model, which will also likely be an SUV, stated Lescow.

Baidu, one of China’s largest internet search giants, announced on January 11 that it will launch a smart automobile company.
The newly formed company will focus its business on passenger cars and develop the entire industry chain of smart car design, production and sales service.
It is announced that the new company will operate independently from the parent company with Geely Auto Group being a strategic partner. Manufacturing will be based on the new Sustainable Experience Architecture(SEA) developed by Geely as the world’s first open-source electric vehicle architecture “that promises to transform the availability of zero-emission cars and trucks in the world’s largest auto markets”.
