Between 2011 and 2016, 94 state prisons and juvenile facilities across the U.S. have closed.
Budget cuts, declining crime rates and poor treatment of prisoners all play a factor in closing a prison. Prison closures and repurposing them for other uses, particularly community uses, offers an opportunity to stretch the public s imagination that doesn t rely on imprisonment, Nicole Porter, director of advocacy, Sentencing Project said.
With an emphasis on alternatives to incarceration, advocates say that repurposing prisons can help drive the conversation around reform. Repurposing them for non incarceration uses is part of a through line that opens up new possibilities for decarceration coalitions and other community based conversations around what might come next to address incarceration and repair its harm, Porter said.

When June Groves started working at Coles, pricing was done by pen and paper and a staff member went to the bank to collect wages.
Fifty-five years later, June is still employed by Coles, and this week, became the longest serving currently employed team member in Australia and pays are electronic.
June’s career at Coles was supposed to be short.
She started at Coles with the intention of working a few months, but months turned into years, and years turned into a celebration to mark her milestone achievement at Gatton.
“If you enjoy what you’re doing, you don’t realise the time flying by, and I have so many positive memories to look back on,” June said.
‘Our Town’ with All-Asian American Cast

The National Asian American Theatre Company will present a virtual reading of “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder with an all-Asian American cast for one night only, Wednesday May 19, at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific, in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The proceeds of this reading will benefit the company. Yumi Iwama, who portrayed Emily Webb in NAATCO’s 1994 production of the play, proposed the reading to NAATCO, following her recent interview with
The New York Times:
“The idea that I was this Asian actress playing this iconic American role was just daunting. I remember being in kind of a high emotional state throughout the run, because I really wanted to do it well. And I loved Emily. She didn’t have these issues of ‘Do I belong here?’ She was part of this town, part of this community. She just lives her life with abandon in a way that I never felt I had the license to.
