RALEIGH â North Carolina state parks experienced a record number of visitors in 2020.
State parks and recreation areas welcomed 19.8 million visitors last year â 400,000 more than any other year on record and 1.2 million more visitors than in 2019. The previous record for visitation was set in 2017 when the parks welcomed 19.4 million visitors.
âAs we came together to face the pandemic, our state parks became a comfort in a time of isolation,â Gov. Roy Cooper said. âThe records set in park visitation show that our outdoor spaces hold even greater value than we could have imagined before the challenges of the last year.â
Park staff attribute the increased visitation not only to public recognition that outdoor recreation promotes better health during the pandemic, but also to recently completed Connect N.C. Bond projects at parks across the state. These projects include improved and expanded campground facilities, new trails and visitor centers and impr
POLKTON The Burnsville Recreation and Learning Center will honor the life of Martin Luther King Jr. through service and volunteering on Jan. 16 and Jan. 18.
Volunteers may come out on these two days to help clean up the Poplar Spring Baptist Church Historical Cemetery.
This cemetery dates back to the 1800’s and, just this year, Carol Smith of the Burnsville Recreation and Learning Center began working on restoring the historic site.
The cemetery received a site number from the North Carolina Office of State Archeology, verifying the land is now historic.
Smith is now needing help to help clear out the overgrown area.

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has given a New Year gift to the people who wish to construct a house on a small plot under its jurisdiction in the Capital City as the authority has notified standard building plans for low risk building category on Friday.
Now, the process has become almost effortless, requires fewer documents and completely hassle-free for landowners planning to construct their dream home. As per the said provision, the plot owners having a standard size residential plots in an approved Layout or Government Residential Scheme plots of BDA, G.A. Department or OSHB or on a final plot in Town Planning Scheme are not required to wait for any building plan approval and they can construct their buildings as per Standard Building Plan only after submitting a form in BDA/BMC office with specified fees.
NC Connect Increases Access To WiFi For Students Published: 28 December 2020
The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is leveraging resources at state parks, historic sites and other community hubs to expand internet access and bolster remote learning opportunities for students across North Carolina.
The “Park and Learn” project, part of a broader effort called NC Student Connect, aims to provide free high-speed WiFi access to students in rural communities.
NC Student Connect was created this year to improve internet connectivity and fill gaps that are a barrier to remote learning. The project is a partnership of state agencies, including the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Hometown Strong, the Department of Information Technology, the Governor’s Education Advisor and the NC Business Committee for Education, to rapidly connect students with remote learning.
