Snowballing national debt

Snowballing national debt Pork barrel projects feared to hurt fiscal health South Korea s national debt has continued to snowball, and according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Tuesday, it is expected to reach 965.9 trillion won ($84.7 billion) by the end of the year. This estimate includes the first extra budget bill of 2021 which has already been submitted to the National Assembly. Last year, the state debt surged by 41.7 trillion won due to four large-scale supplementary budgets drawn up amid the persisting COVID-19 pandemic. Experts even forecast that it will surpass 1,000 trillion won by the end of the year, should this year s extra budgets amount to the same level as those from 2020.

Tax revenue growth, federal aid may boost bottom line of new state budget

Hoosier lawmakers working to craft the new, two-year state budget ahead of an April 29 deadline likely will have additional money available to spend on education, teacher pay raises, and myriad other state needs or wants. Data released last week by the State Budget Agency show both sales and individual income tax revenue in January and February considerably exceeded the expectations set in the December 2020 revenue forecast. February sales tax collections, largely reflecting January purchases, totaled $695.2 million, which was $62.4 million, or 9.9%, greater than the revenue forecast, according to the State Budget Agency. More than 12,000 Hoosiers have died from COVID-19 since March 2020. There are real names, faces and human stories behind that staggering number. This Sunday, The Times partners with 11 Indiana news agencies to share the stories of dozens of “Hoosiers We’ve Lost” in a special print section and online presentation. Watch for it Sunday.
