Four years ago, 64 rigs were actively drilling in the oil field in North Dakota. As of Tuesday, 17 rigs were actively drilling. The current downturn has had an impact on North Dakota’s oil patch but yet the state produced 1.083 million barrels of oil a day in February, the most recent numbers released by the state last month. “Right now it’s all about staying within cash flow and staying within trying to survive and trying to restore some economic strength,” said Ron Ness, president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council in Bismarck.

Hirning most recently spent 18 years as associate vice president of the northern region at National University in Fresno, California. He previously worked three years as a business professor at Mayville State. Hirning grew up in Mott (ND). He got his associate degree at Williston State in 1985…his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Minot State…and his PhD at Capella University in Minneapolis. Hirning begins his new job on July 1
