When you search B.C.’s first-of-its-kind land transparency registry some beneficial ownership information will be blocked because the new law that underpins the registry requires a 90-day holding period before the info is publicly released.
The registry, one of the B.C. government’s actions to combat money laundering in real estate, opened to the public April 30.

And because companies, trusts and limited partnerships weren’t required to begin filing transparency reports until the end of November, there is only 2 1/2 months of filings that are accessible, those from Nov. 30 to mid-February, 2021.
, real estate sales are up nearly 61% for this year’s first quarter compared with 2020. According to Jack Wolfe, broker at LIV Sotheby’s International Realty in Breckenridge, it’s this statistic that stands out the most.
“That’s significant,” Wolfe said. “That’s probably one of the biggest bullet points or things that stand out to me because of how significant real estate sales are doing.”
March alone was up 127% in sales compared with 2020, which is on trend for the first few months of the year. February was up 23% compared with last year, and January was up 32%. This includes residential, commercial and timeshare sales.

Land Owner Transparency Registry opens to public
Transparency information on interest holders of B.C. real estate is available for public search in the Land Owner Transparency Registry, giving law enforcement and tax authorities a significant tool to combat money laundering in the real estate market, according to the B.C. Ministry of Finance.
The Land Owner Transparency Registry is a first-of-its-kind registry in Canada that requires beneficial ownership disclosure for all land types. Whenever a relevant corporation, trust or partnership buys land in B.C., they are now required to disclose the interest holders of that land and file that information with the registry through a transparency report.
