An effort by a Taranaki iwi to uphold a Treaty settlement blunder that would have allowed it to buy properties from the Crown at 20 per cent less than market price has been rejected by the High Court.
There is no right of objection under the legislation used to acquire the NG building. Christchurch City Council previously confirmed the site needed to be cleared to make way for the $473m stadium being built across the three city blocks bordered by Madras, Hereford, Barbadoes and Tuam streets. Lydia Bloy, group manager for Crown property from Land Information New Zealand (Linz), which is responsible for acquiring land, said the Crown notified the owners on April 14 they would proceed with compulsory acquisition.

The building sits near the south-west corner of the three city blocks designated for the stadium. The surrounding buildings are all owned by the Crown.
“I don t know if it s just because the people are New Zealanders and feel that they have more of a right to use the land than others, that s part of it. I think it may be, as well, an aspect of the fact that people have been cooped up and suddenly allowed to go free, and then they get told they’re not allowed to be where they are.” However, there was no excuse for such hostility. An assault on an officer was “particularly nasty” and police were working on a prosecution, Humphries this month told councillors. “The closure of the two non-self-contained sites [Waitapu Bridge and Taupata Point] there have resulted in freedom campers bomb bursting everywhere . and we have issued a lot more freedom camping infringement notices in Golden Bay than previous years because people are going where they shouldn t be going,” Humphries said.

Phillipstown Community Centre Charitable Trust manager Dr Viviana Zanetti is concerned about what will happen to the community facility when the current lease expires in December.
The future of a community hub on the site of an earthquake-damaged Christchurch school remains uncertain as its lease comes up for renewal. Ten organisations and 45 casual groups use the Phillipstown Community Hub on Nursery Rd, which opened six years ago. About 850 people attended classes, social activities, health and fitness programmes and support meetings there each week.
Phillipstown Community Centre Charitable Trust leases the site and manages the various rooms and outdoor spaces. It pays costs but is not required to pay rent to the Ministry of Education.
