The NSW government has allocated an additional $9.85 million to address what Indigenous leaders describe as shocking delays resolving more than 38,000 outstanding Aboriginal land rights and native title claims.
The chair of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council Anne Dennis said the funding would provide more certainty over land claims. At the present rate, though, it would still take 100 years before existing claims were resolved.
The funding includes $6 million to increase the skills of local Aboriginal land councils so their claims on unused and unoccupied Crown land will be resolved faster by negotiating agreements. This is a quicker route than the often decades-long determination process.
