The west was won by homesteaders – pioneers bold enough to stake their hopes and dreams on a cash crop and a sod shack. Some places proved unsuitable for farming and all that remains is a rusty windmill. But in other areas, like the Gallatin Valley, barley boomed and neighbors sprouted up on all sides. Now, over a century later, wheat fields brush up against the side of a Starbucks and swathed fields are swapped for subdivisions as fast as the bricks can be laid. Welcome to the world that Greg and Sherwin Leep, third generation Montana farmers, wake up to every day. Their grandpa ran dairy cattle, and then their father started farming some ground near Four Corners to help support the family of 12.
Extension specialistsâ workloads monitored
A newly signed law requires the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents and UW-Madison chancellor to develop policies to monitor and report on Extension and outreach workloads of specialists funded by the UW-Division of Extension. The measure pertains to Extension-funded faculty and staff who work in applied agriculture at UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, or UW-Madisonâs College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
âOur state specialists are doing amazing work on the ground and in their communities, helping farmers adapt and grow their businesses and supporting the agricultural industry that is the backbone of our state,â said Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers. âIâm glad to sign this bill so they can continue doing their good work and be recognized for going above and beyond for our farmers and our state.â

Conservation is a term used to describe efforts to make humans interaction with the ecosystem more secure while also consuming natural resources. Conservationists are usually in favor of policies that reduce human utilization of natural resources, but only where they are useful to humanity. They will likely favor a program that granted tax breaks to homeowners who built solar panels, but not one that prevented the building of roads in national parks. Conservation may also refer to the decisions people make on a daily basis to reduce their consumption, such as taking shorter showers or installing solar panels.
