Over the last two days, Councillors mulled over
5,690 submissions from the public – the most ever received
on city proposals. These submissions provided feedback on
Council’s 11 specific topics, plus other city
issues.
Following a three-day discussion, Council
instructed staff to prepare a budget based on investing $2.5
billion on capital projects plus $3.7 billion in operating
costs. In addition, Council resolved to
invest:
$55 million over 10 years to provide safe
routes for walking, biking, scooting and skating around the
city.
$3 million to upgrade the Gordonton Road /
Puketaha Road intersection starting in

Over the past seven decades, New Zealanders have become increasingly dependent on cars to move around – a trend embraced in Hamilton where more than 85 per cent of city trips are made in cars. But creating a seismic shift in the city’s transport network won’t come cheap, with some estimates putting the cost to ratepayers and taxpayers at more than $900 million over the next three decades.

An electrician by profession and enthusiastic thespian by choice, he went from pushing buttons and plugging things in, to making deals, building relationships and friendships – all on the city’s behalf – as a way of making things happen, and building new audiences in a growing city. Sutherland died peacefully at home in early April, with his wife and lifetime companion Lorraine Sutherland by his side. He was 63. Theatre bought the couple together, and it would be a constant source of inspiration, love and creativity which kept them strong over a long marriage. It was a deep bond and understanding which would see theatre items hastily repaired at home or home items hastily rushed to the theatre by Richard. When Sir Ian McKellen came through Hamilton in aid of Christchurch’s 2011 earthquake, Richard provided the only throne-like chair he knew of… straight from the couple’s lounge.
